“C’est la berezina!” – “This is Berezina!”. In modern French, this expression has firmly entered as a designation of a complete catastrophe and collapse. The book of the French military historian Francois-Gi Urtull “1812. Berezina. The victory in the height of the disaster” is dedicated to the tragic and terrible in its details the events of the end of the campaign of 1812. The army dragging from Moscow was only the shadow of the formidable Great Army, which crossed Neman in June of the same year. This crowd was kind to the seemingly insurmountable barrier – a partially frozen Berezina river, carrying its ice waters. On both banks of the river, large masses of Russian troops were concentrated. It would seem that there is no way out and it remains only to die or surrender. What can be in this case a “victory in the midst of a disaster”? However, despite the hopelessness of the situation, the crossing through Berezina enters history not only as a symbol of terrible collapse and death, but also as a brilliant military operation, one of the vertices of Napoleon’s military art.
