The book examines the phenomenon of performance in modern artistic culture. Erica Fisher Likht understands the performance as an independent artistic event that has its own essence. She considers the art of performance with no less close attention than is accepted in science in relation to traditional types of art, explores the origins of the performance and its modern existence and comes to the conclusion about the need to create a new aesthetics, capable of describing and interpreting it. In the final chapters, the author formulates the basic concepts of the new aesthetics, intended not only to interpret individual performances and “presentations”, but also to more deeply understand the performative nature of modern culture.
This book is intended for everyone who is interested in performance, its place in modern culture, as well as an experimental theater and new forms of artistic practice in the broad sense of the word.
