“Fiery engines” Arkhipa Lulka: Lydia Kuzmina

It was not for nothing that the USSR aviation anthem praised “instead of a heart of a fiery motor” – the victories of any Air Force depend not only on the genius of aircraft designers and combat training of pilots, but also on the level of motor design. It was the lag in this industry that predetermined the failures and huge losses of the “Stalin Falcon” at the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. The Soviet engines managed to catch up and overtake the West only in the 1960s. And the leading role in this “war of the aircraft engine” was played by Arkhip Mikhailovich Lulka, the creator of the first domestic turbojet engine and “fiery hearts” for Sukhoi, Mikoyan, Ilyushin, Tupolev, Berieva aircraft. And the top of his work was a unique engine for the Su-27 heavy fighter, on which many world records of speed, height, range, super-dominance and supernights are installed.
