For a long time, the lives of saints have been the most beloved reading in Rus’. They were read by secular and spiritual people, in monasteries, not a single meal did without such a reading. But during the Batyev invasion, many precious books died, and among them the biographies of saints. Those that used were the most part of the translations, and often bad, from the Greek, Latin and even Polish language. Several attempts were made to collect all the lives and publish them in a language that are understandable to the people. However, this work was huge, and no one could fulfill it before St. Demetrius. He was the only one, as if deliberately created for her, because it combined a great education, eloquence, and love for saints, and an ardent desire to show people a real Christian life.
