Metropolitan Filaret (in the world Vasily Mikhailovich Drozdov; December 26, 1782 [6.01.1783] – November 19, 1867 [2.12.1867]) – the largest Russian Orthodox theologian of the XIX century. During the Office of the Moscow diocese with its blessing and with tireless care, several new monasteries were founded. As an extraordinary person, Filaret caused contemporaries different feelings and judgments about himself. Conservatives considered Filaret Mason and a secret Protestant, calling the “Jacobin in theology” and “carbonarium”; The liberals, on the contrary, saw the enemy of the Enlightenment in him.
It was thanks to Filaret (Drozdov) that the synodal translation of the Bible saw the light and Russia finally received the Word of God in its language.
The activity of St. Filaret is prying and multifaceted, it concerns almost all aspects of the life of the society of that time. This is also evidenced by his creative heritage: works, theological works and sermons.
