Academician A. S. Orlov (1871-1947) is one of the leading Russian philologists and historians of the 20th century, he left a noticeable mark on the study of Russian literature, mainly the ancient period. The course of lectures on ancient Russian literature of the XI-XVII centuries proposed to the attention of the reader, which survived in the 1930-1940s. Three publications may be attributed to the number of classical manuals in this section of the science of literature. It is hoped that his lectures, written by an excellent style, will be useful today for students who first begin to get acquainted with domestic literature for the first seven centuries of its history.
