Henri Marie Bayil, who created Stendhal under the pseudonym, lived in Italy for a long time and passionately loved this country. Traveling a lot, he enthusiastically comprehended Italian art. In 1817, Stendhal published a two -volume work “The History of Painting in Italy”, in which he outlined his aesthetic views. The author devoted separate books of his work to the biography of the great masters of high revival – Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
