The book considers the current state of use of supercomputers in the tasks of the weather forecast and the climate of the Earth. Parallel implementations and development trends of models of the atmosphere, ocean and joint models are presented. Particular attention is paid to the experience of developing and implementing global models of the atmosphere, the ocean and the earth system at the Institute of Computing Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The model of the earth system consists of two main blocks: hydrothermodynamics of the atmosphere and ocean, and may also include blocks of the evolution of sea ice, carbon cycle, and atmosphere chemistry. The completeness of the description of the main climate -forming processes allows you to conduct numerical experiments with the earth system to reproduce the modern climate, its past and probable future changes in various assumptions. An overview of the methods of assimilation of meteorological observation data is also provided, the choice of the most suitable for the implementation on the massively parallel architecture of algorithms is justified.
